PRESS RELEASE: SASSCAL Pioneers Earth Observation for Resilience and Innovation in Africa

Southern Africa Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL), a consortium under the Global Monitoring for Environment and Security and Africa (GMES & Africa) will be exhibiting at the First GMES & Africa Phase 2 Continental Forum to take place from the 27th to the 30th of November 2023 in Sharm El Sheikh in Egypt.

SASSCAL alongside key stakeholders, policy makers, scientist, academia, end users and Seven (7) other GMES & Africa consortia will be participating in this continental forum to engage and showcase its Earth Observation (EO) products and services under the theme Earth Observation for Resilience and Innovation in Africa.

SASSCAL is the implementing institution for the Wetland Monitoring and Assessment Service for Transboundary Basins in Southern Africa (WeMAST,  a project approved under GMES & Africa to design and develop an integrated platform with data products and tool for wetland monitoring and assessment that will support sustainable wetlands management systems.

The forum creates a platform for SASSCAL to ignite and lobby behind the GMES & Africa initiative on its Pan African mandate aimed at strengthening the capabilities of African institutions with the required resources for access to and exploitation of Earth Observation -based services in Water and natural Resources, Wetlands and Marine and Coastal areas domains, in line with the AU Agenda 2063 and the Africa Space Policy and Strategy.

During the Forum, SASSCAL will showcase its dedication towards the advancement of Earth Observation technologies to mitigate climate change and global environmental challenges.

SASSCAL’s Executive Director Dr Jane Olwoch and team will engage and showcase the WeMAST Geoportal products and services. SASSCAL will actively contribute to shaping the dialogue around earth observation, resilience, and innovation to enhance and integrate EO services for promoting socio-economic development in Southern African.
