FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SASSCAL Welcomes Transition of GMES and Africa Programme to the African Space Agency
The Southern African Science Service Centre for Climate Change and Adaptive Land Management (SASSCAL) welcomes the official transition of the GMES and Africa Programme to the African Space Agency (AfSA), as announced by H.E. Dr. Tidiane Ouattara, President of the African Space Council of the African Space Agency.
This strategic institutional alignment by the African Union marks a significant milestone in Africa’s quest to build a cohesive, homegrown space programme that supports sustainable development, environmental management, and climate resilience across the continent.
As a proud implementing partner of the GMES and Africa Programme, SASSCAL reaffirms its full commitment to this new phase under AfSA’s leadership. Through its regional project, the Wetland Monitoring and Assessment System for Transboundary Basins in Southern Africa (WeMAST), SASSCAL has been contributing to improved monitoring and management of critical wetland ecosystems using Earth Observation data.
WeMAST, under the GMES and Africa framework, supports evidence-based decision-making in water resources, land use, and environmental governance in Southern Africa. With this transition, SASSCAL looks forward to enhanced collaboration, improved coordination, and greater visibility under the African Space Agency.
All project-related communication, visibility actions, and stakeholder engagements will now align with the African Space Agency’s official branding and identity, as required.
SASSCAL acknowledges and appreciates the continued support of the GMES and Africa Coordination Team and remains committed to the Programme’s objectives under AfSA’s stewardship.
